synopsis

After the death of Tom Doniphon, Senator Ransom Stoddard returns to Shinbone for the funeral and shares the story behind it with a local newspaper editor. Years earlier, Stoddard arrived in town as a lawyer, but after local outlaw Liberty Valance robbed the stagecoach, he lost everything except a few law books. Stoddard took a job in the kitchen of the Ericsons' restaurant, where he met his future wife Hallie. As the territory was vying for Statehood, Stoddard was chosen as a representative over Valance, who continued to terrorize the town. When Valance destroyed the local newspaper office and attacked the editor, Stoddard challenged him, but the outcome was not as clear-cut as it was often depicted in legends.
