What is the Plot of The Woman King?
The year is 1823 and the setting is the West African Kingdom of Dahomey. General Nanisca leads the Agojie, consists of a team of fearless all-female warriors, and liberate Dahomean women abducted by slavers from the Oyo Empire. The King of Dahomey responds by preparing for an imminent war with the Oyo.
To protect the kingdom, Nanisca begins training a new generation of warriors to join the Agojie. One of these new warriors is Nawi, a strong-willed girl who was offered to the king by her father after refusing to marry men who would abuse her. Nawi befriends a veteran Agojie named Izogie, and confides in Nanisca that she was adopted and reveals a birthmark on her left shoulder, which shocks Nanisca.
Santo Ferreira, a Portuguese slave trader, and his half-Dahomean accomplice Malik come to Dahomey as part of an ally with the Oyo led by Oba Ade. While Malik is bathing, Nawi comes across him and the two strike up a friendship. Nawi meets with Malik and knows that the Oyo are planning an attack. She tells this to Nanisca, but receives a scolding for her recklessness.
Nanisca then reveals that she was captured and raped by Oba in her youth, and gave birth to a daughter before giving her away. She embedded a shark tooth in her left shoulder before doing so. With Nanisca's help, Nawi extracts the tooth, which confirms that she is Nanisca's biological daughter.
Nanisca commanders the Agojie fighting in the attack, which proves successful, but Oba manages to escape while Nawi and Izogie are taken captive. One of the captured Agojie manages to escape and informs Nanisca of their fate. Ghezo plans to appoint a Woman King, a partner and equal to him in ruling Dahomey, and chooses Nanisca for the role. However, he refuses to authorize a rescue mission for the captive Agojie.
Meanwhile, in captivity, Izogie dies in an attempted escape while Malik purchases Nawi to keep her safe. Despite orders to stay put, Nanisca leads a group of like-minded warriors to rescue the captives. In the ensuing chaos, Nawi escapes and rejoins Nanisca. Malik frees other slaves and drowns Ferreira, while Nanisca engages in a single combat with Oba and emerges victorious.
The triumphant Agojie return to Dahomey, where Ghezo briefly reprimands Nanisca for disobeying him before officially crowning her as the Woman King. After the celebrations, Nanisca and Nawi acknowledge their familial relationship in private.

The movie is based on historical research and draws inspiration from the lives of these warriors and other notable figures from the time, but it also takes creative liberties and invents characters and plot points for the sake of the story.
In The Woman King reviews, this movie has also been criticized for historical inaccuracies. While the film celebrates the female warriors, it has been accused of downplaying the Dahomey tribe's participation in the slave trade.
