synopsis

The Shop Around the Corner tells that in Budapest, Hungary, Mr. Hugo Matuschek owns the Matuschek and Company store, where Alfred Kralik is his most experienced salesman. She and Kralik don't get along as Klara Novak is hired as a saleswoman. Kralik has a secret pen pal whom he plans to propose to soon but is fired without explanation on the night of their meeting. He goes to a bar to meet his pen pal, and to his surprise, discovers it is Klara. Ashamed of being fired, he does not reveal his identity to her. Later, Matuschek realizes his mistake and hires Kralik as the manager. Klara remains interested in her pen pal and does not pay attention to Kralik. However, Kralik comes up with a plan to reveal his identity to Klara, as he is now attracted to her despite their initial disagreements.
