synopsis

Pretty Baby primarily tells the story set in 1917 in Storyville, the red-light district of New Orleans, where a prostitute named Hattie and her 12-year-old daughter, Violet, live in the opulent brothel owned by Nell, where Hattie works. Photographer Ernest J. Bellocq is fascinated by Hattie and Violet and is a frequent visitor to the brothel. One day, Nell auctions off Violet's virginity, and the highest bidder pays a staggering $400 to spend a night with her. Hattie subsequently marries a wealthy client and moves to St. Louis, leaving Violet alone in the brothel. The young girl decides to marry Bellocq and moves in with him. However, everything changes one day when Hattie, who has overcome her past, visits Bellocq's house with Violet.
