synopsis

Roberta Glass is a housewife from Fort Lee, New Jersey who feels trapped in her unadventurous life and marriage to her predictable husband Gary. Roberta reads personal ads in search of excitement and becomes obsessed with a woman named Susan. When Susan posts an ad titled "Desperately Seeking Susan" and asks to meet Jim in Battery Park, Roberta goes there to observe. She witnesses Susan's wild, free-spirited nature and becomes fascinated with her. When Roberta buys Susan's distinctive leather jacket, she gets amnesia and begins to believe she is Susan. Meanwhile, a criminal named Wayne is after Susan's valuable Egyptian earrings and begins to track down Roberta, whom he believes is Susan. As Roberta falls in love with a man named Dez, confusion and danger mount, and Roberta must decide whether to embrace her new life or return to her old one.
