synopsis

Paul Kersey, an open-minded architect, returns to New York City from a vacation with his wife, feeling euphoric. Despite his cynical coworker's warning about the increasing crime rate, Paul, a compassionate liberal, believes that poverty is the root cause of crime. However, his coworker's warning becomes a stark reality when his wife is murdered, and his daughter is sexually assaulted in their own apartment, with the police unable to find reliable leads. His overly sensitive son-in-law exacerbates his feelings of hopelessness, and he realizes that the police can't be omnipresent. Out of compassion, his boss sends him to Arizona, where Paul experiences the Old West's ideals. When he returns to New York, his perspective on muggers is compromised.
