synopsis

Eddie Jessup, a brilliant but eccentric graduate student, conducts experiments on himself in an isolation chamber in the late 1960s. He experiences vivid hallucinations, many of which have religious overtones, despite not being religious himself. Seven years later, Eddie is a respected professor at Harvard Medical School, but he feels he has lost his edge and become too conventional. To regain his spark, he resumes his work on sensory deprivation, this time incorporating untested hallucinogens from Mexico. When he claims to have entered an alternate physical and mental state, his colleagues and his wife become concerned for his well-being. If his claims are true, Eddie could pose a danger to himself and those around him.
