synopsis

In 1982, a massive alien spaceship arrived over Johannesburg, South Africa, carrying a struggling alien population referred to as "The Prawns." Despite an initial warm reception from the human population, the aliens were eventually confined to a militarized ghetto called District 9, where they suffered exploitation and poverty. In 2010, a corporation called Multi-National United was hired to evict the alien residents and Wikus van der Merwe was put in charge of the operation. However, Wikus is accidentally exposed to an alien substance and must seek help from two of the residents, the only friends he has in the alien community.
