synopsis

A man who escaped after murdering the judge assigned to his case took a single mother battling drug addiction hostage in her own apartment. On March 11, 2005, Brian Nichols escaped from Fulton County Courthouse in Atlanta while on trial for rape. While fleeing, he also killed Judge Roland Barnes presiding over the trial and Julie Brandau, a court reporter. Sheriff Hoyt Teasley was also shot by Nichols as he fled the courthouse, and ICE Agent David G. Wilhelm was later shot by Nichols at his home while off duty kill. After the murder, Nichols was the target of a citywide manhunt. Eventually, he ends up at the apartment of Ashley Smith, a single mother recovering from methamphetamine addiction, and takes her hostage. As Nichols sought redemption, Smith found solace and inspiration in Rick Warren's bestseller, The Purpose Driven Life.
